A home automation system will integrate a variety of subsystems within the home, such as the security, lighting control, garage door opener, irrigation system, landscape lighting, heating and cooling system, automated window treatments, and various appliances.  You might think of it as a network where the various subsystems all interact and communicate with each other.  This creates a "smart home" where multiple tasks can be triggered according to a schedule or by changes in the living environment.

For example, an automated home can turn off all the lights in the house and raise the air conditioner's thermostat a few degrees whenever the security system is armed in the 'away' mode.  When the security system is disarmed the automation system can return the thermostat to is 'at home' setting, turn on soft background music, and, if it is after dusk, then turn on certain entry lights.  When it's time to go to sleep, a single button on a scene switch located next to the bed can be pressed to arm the security system in the 'stay' mode, turn out all the lights in the house, bring the hallway lights on to 30% brightness, close the garage door (if it was open), and turn off the TV in the living room.  These are very simple automation tasks made possible by an automation system.

Other examples are plentiful.  Suppose the temperature outside the home is four degrees cooler than the temperature inside the home and the air conditioner is running.  The keypad or touchscreen on the wall can flash a message which advises that the whole house fan be used to cool the house down.  Subsequently, if the kitchen window is opened within two minutes of the laundry room window being opened then the automation system can turn off the air conditioner and turn on the whole house fan for fifteen minutes.
